Create Space Description

CreateSpace is the Print on Demand (POD) self-publishing arm of Amazon.com. It allows authors to get their work into print and sell through the Amazon bookstores, plus allowing musicians and film makers to create and sell music CDs or multimedia DVDs through the CD on Demand and DVD on Demand channels.

Music and film files may also be made available for digital download via MP3 Download or Video Download services. Authors wishing to make their books available online can use the Digital Text Platform at http://dtp.amazon.com.

Create Space Detailed Overview

Although CreateSpace is billed as a free self-publishing service, you do have to pay for printing and shipping of proof copies, so it’s not possible to get your book into print without at least a minimal outlay.

The Standard Plan, or free services, includes sales of your book in your own e-Store and on Amazon.com. If you want to make your products available to a wider audience, you will need to upgrade to the Pro Plan, currently at a cost of $39 plus an annual $5 per product fee. This, however, gives you access to the Expanded Distribution Channel, meaning you can make your book available to retailers, bookstores, libraries, academic institutions, wholesalers and distributors. It also makes proof and author copies cheaper, so if you expect to order twenty or more of your own title, for example to make available at ‘Back of Room’ sales opportunities on speaking engagements, it is probably worth your while.

CreateSpace also offers a range of Publishing Solutions at https://www.createspace.com/Services/PublisherSolutionServiceTable.jsp, which may or may not be of value to the inexperienced self-publisher. These include copy editing, help with interior and cover files, and the creation of Press Releases and Video Book Trailers. Packages start at $299 for “Author’s Express,” which basically includes phone support and access to the accounts management team during the file upload process. At the other end of the scale is the “Marketing Pro” at $4,999, which includes cover design, interior formatting and images, and basic marketing materials and distribution.

Create Space Reputation

At $39, the Pro Plan offers value, and is cheaper than similar services from its closest competitor LuLu.com. CreateSpace also doesn’t push its pricier options too heavily, and tends to be focused towards the self-publisher who is able and willing to take on most of the work, thereby keeping the price down.

Although getting a manuscript and cover .pdf files through the verification process can be a steep learning curve, CreateSpace provide details of changes to be made and why, and with a few attempts, even a complete novice can learn the ropes without too much pain.

My experience with the DIY version of the self-publishing process with CreateSpace appears, from a Google search, to be the norm. It’s technical, but not overly difficult if you take your time and read all the available help files.

One last word of caution, that applies to not just the more expensive CreateSpace packages, but to all POD and vanity publishing. Don’t assume that because you have paid more to get your book into print it will automatically sell more copies. Most reviewers suggest that even with these services, the author will still have to do the bulk of the promotional work, and that getting your book into bookstores and on shelves may still be a challenge. Also, with each additional cost, the number of books that need to be sold to reach break-even increases, so do your math carefully and try to be realistic about the sales you might make before splashing out on these extras.

First attempt using createspace

This was my first time at self publishing a book. I chose create space firstly because it was free and secondly because it was an amazon company.

Create space leads you through the whole process, ie: different sections to complete such as title, IBSN, interior file, cover, file review, etc. All of these sections need to be completed correctly, if they are not they will tell you what you have done wrong and what you need to do to correct it.

Yes, it can be frustrating at times as sometimes you can't quite make out whats wrong, but I just put this down to first effort.

Create space provides you with a free IBSN which is definitely a plus as these quite often you have to pay for.

They provide some basic book covers if you don't want to (or struggle to) design your own. I personally think it is definitely worth the extra time and effort to create your own. If you can't do this yourself , find a man who can!

Once your book has been reviewed and accepted it is just a waiting game for your proof to arrive.

Waiting for the book to arrive is the most frustrating part, (especially if in the UK, took 6 weeks).

When it arrived the quality was good.

I personally will continue using them and gaining more experience with this self publishing, but for anyone out there like I did who loves the idea of publishing a book then create space is ideal, very ideal!

Exactaly What I Wanted!

Create Space.com has been a wonderful experience. I haven't gotten my book quite finished yet, but every step has been very well explained and so easy to follow. It has been great for someone like me, who doesn't do well on computers most of the time. I'm already planning to use Create Space.com for publishing more books.

My View: Just the Facts

It is true that the profit margin is slim or virtually non-existent. However, there is another side to this story. Amazon’s nearest competitor is CDbaby but they charge a $35 setup fee per album (of one hour in length?). Create Space is different because it’s free to get started and they assign a UPC# Barcode for free (which is generally required to sell CD’s). However, CD Baby charges $20 extra for every barcode on top of their other fees.

Both sites require you to order copies of your own CD’s/ or pre-pay for them to cover the cost of production before you can sell physical CD’s to others. (This is like an insurance policy that insures you have a vested interest in selling your stuff since you have already bought it). With Create Space you can order 10 CD’s at $5 each to get started for 50 bucks. On CDbaby $50 barely covers the setup fee and barcode.

On most sites you have to invest money up-front thus carrying the risk. Most sites charge album setup fees, recurring membership fees, or annual maintenance fees if your album/ tracks do not sell a minimum dollar/ cash value each year. This is because the company is not making a profit from commissions on sales. Anyway, this is another view on the matter.

Attention Authors and Musicians

I am only familiar with the services offered for Audiobook and Music CD production, so I will discuss these parts. Create Space maybe a good option for you if:

* You already have a ready made book or manuscript

* You already have a recorded music production

* You need to have CD’s replicated and distributed

* You are happy to accept a profit share of 1/20th

What you will pay. Create Space charges a $5 production fee per CD plus takes 45 percent of the sale price per unit for sales generated on Amazon.com Let’s solve a math problem together.

$5 + $4.50 = $9.50 goes to Amazon

The above assumes each CD is sold for $10. (So $10 x 0.45 = $4.50 per unit). So you get half a dollar or fifty cents per CD sold. The profit margin on Amazon sales for the artist/author comes out to five percent. Which is calculated as follows: $0.50 profit x $10 sale price = 1/20th.

In this example, the customer will pay $10 per CD plus Shipping and Handling (say $10 + $5 S&H = $15) more for residents of Hawaii or Alaska. I can guarantee that if you set your price above $10 per CD you will sell nothing or only a few copies. Amazon charges a $5 duplication/printing fee per individual disc (maximum 70 minutes in length).

Let’s face the reality, most of your sales will come from Amazon.com. Also, CD’s are no longer popular like they once were. Nowadays it’s mostly digital goods and MP3’s. Take a look at the Itunes store and their pricing on popular music albums.

Furthermore, the above numbers exclude the expenses of recording your music in a studio or the cost of professional audio book production. It leaves no room for an advertising budget nor affiliate program. You say “I’ll record it myself, on my computer. ” That might work, but if it fails to meet Amazon’s minimum quality standards for sound/audio they will reject it. Unless it sounds fabulous, nobody will want it even for free.

LISTEN TO EXTRACTS FROM THE VOLITION AUDIO BOOK

If you love music, this is the place!

Its as simple as you make movie or write a song, give it a title and bang! you can start selling. As it is integrated with Amazon.com you will have a huge customer base. People tend to buy stuff from amazon as it is secure and trustworthy.

For authors who want to sell their work online it's a treasure as the site's link with amazon gives the advantage. There are two plans and personally I prefer the pro plan over the standard free plan.

The pro plan has the advantage as my work will be available in all the stores, resellers etc.
